Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) - Piedmont Network

This section monitors Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) across the Piedmont electrical network. The calculations rely on raw magnetometer data to compute the localized effects of geomagnetic storms.

The physical model uses a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to analyze the magnetic field spectrum and calculates the surface impedance Z(f). By applying a specialized GIC index filter, the model determines the induced electric field. The resulting currents depend heavily on the transmission line distances and the specific soil conductivity of the geological zones involved, such as alluvial plains, gravel, sand, and crystalline rocks.
